Maryanto (b. 1977, Indonesia) makes artworks that tell stories through theatrical or landscape settings. The constructed forms materialize through an inquiry into historical research, myths and tales, combined with the artist’s imagination. The results are dramatic and romantic black and white installations made of paintings, etchings and rich charcoal drawings that evoke environments. The subject of this ongoing project stems from Maryanto’s interest in natural resources and their effect on a country and its systems and politics. This project will serve as a preview for a Volume 1 of a solo exhibition at Yeo Workshop (Gillman Barracks, Singapore) in September 2014.
