Research Presentation and Panel Discussion on S. Namasivayam | Against All Odds | 16 November 2019
In conjunction with the opening of S. Namasivayam's first major retrospective Points of Articulation, Yeo Workshop will be organising a research presentation and panel discussion pertaining to the artistic discipline of life drawing. In light of the widespread opprobrium that was initially directed at the field of life drawing due to its perceived associations with moral depravity, Namasivayam and his peers had to confront great challenges in seeking to propagate their chosen aesthetic passion. Consequently, the discussion will illuminate an important but hitherto neglected aspect of artistic development in Singapore by engaging with this once taboo subject.
Some questions they will be tackling are: What were the obstacles faced by the initial generation of Singaporean artists who chose to specialize in life drawing? Did Namasivayam and his peers from Group 90 leave a lasting impression on the development of the figurative art in Singapore or was their influence fleeting and ephemeral? How have popular receptions towards the artistic nude evolved since the heyday of Namasivayam? Is figurative art a thriving element of the wider art scene in Singapore or do contemporary artists regard it as a historical relic that no longer holds any relevance to them?Date: 09/11/2019
