Filippo Sciascia
Filippo Sciascia deftly manifests concepts through materiality beyond mere painterly representation. In Primitive Learning (2021), he uses synthetic fur to construct windows panes that resemble the roman number XX, which highlights the Industrial Revolution in the 20th century that has transformed societies. The use of fur and windows continue to build on the motif of shelter in his practice, where early uses with technology recall the development of leather for clothing and tentages; while windows symbolise the abode in modern society. It follows the artist’s abiding interest in light and social evolution, from biological processes to ancient knowledge to present day AI (Artificial Intelligence) and machine learning. Sciascia transmutes objects and materials in ways that might not seem entirely obvious at first glance, urging deep reflection on our own perspectives.
