Titled ‘0. (Zero Point)’, the performance, first conducted at Asia Now 2022, sees Dong using her hair as a brush to complete a painting with black ink. She references Malevich’s Black Square, which in her performative adaptation, brings attention to the ‘zero point’ of the female asian body. Critical of the histories that underpin the bodies of others’ having collaborated with artists and performers in the past, Dong uses her own body in this instance to question the reading of her work as necessarily autobiographical.

Artist Statement: For this performance I would like to use my body (hair) as a brush and draw with black ink on white square paper. Here I'm making reference to the work Black Square of Malevich ("zero point of painting"). In my adaptation of meaning it is the zero point of the female asian body. Here I like to practice performance as a physical manifestation to move away from the stage to construct the identity of the body. I'm interested in changing observation by using the body with all significance to send information.

I was alway thinking of art in connection with paintings and I like the process of it. During my approach to performance art I was including the media video that I was working with. To tell stories with moving images. With performance I can combine, think about all the media, painting, sound, sculpture and moving image at the same time. I was always critical about using others' bodies to perform for me, so I used my body to perform. My artworks were read by the critics as migration art, asian art, autobiographical. This performance is just to clarify that the body of a performance can read as a tool for the process of an artwork.
