This series of 6 works begins with a photograph of a card from the postal service from 1962 that belonged to the artist’s grandaunt. These are records from Malaya, the time before Singapore’s independence. Instead of just displacing these historical documents, she allows them to enter her studio as art objects, displaced from their original space and use. In this way, the photos are no longer simply displaced but create a new artistic function. She investigates into the role of the image as a document, the artist creates interventions into the image by hand-sanding the photograph. These omit certain informations on the card, exploring possibilities of directions. These sanded visual forms become critical meditations on the importance of materiality, reproduction and language in one’s reflections on history and meaning-making.
