Lake Tamblingan is a natural lake located on the slopes of Mount Lesung, Bali. It is one of three twin lakes formed within a vast ancient caldera in Buleleng Regency. Its name is believed to have come from the Balinese words tamba (medicine) and elingang (to remind, or memory, awareness).
According to local legend, the waters of Lake Tamblingan once healed nearby villages during a time of plague, through rituals led by spiritual practitioners. The surrounding communities continue to safeguard the lake and its forests under traditional laws, keeping the area largely untouched by tourism so that both its natural beauty and sacred character remain preserved.
In the forest near the lake stands a tall banyan tree. Its massive trunk and dangling aerial roots rise from the earth, its canopy reaches so high that it can be seen from the water’s edge.
In Bali, banyan trees are considered “living temples.” They are associated with the Tree of Life, believed to connect the realms of heaven and earth. As part of the sacred landscape, they are treated not merely as plants but as spiritual beings—giants that breathe, sing, and offer coolness and shelter to all who come near
