In the myriad of ways Filippo Sciascia has expounded in his fascination with light and social revolution, he turns to classical painting in Primitive Learning (2022). Where portraiture is telling of an artist’s hand and technique, he moves away from conventional photorealism and reduces the composition of his painting to elucidate the light from the device screen. Sciascia reminds us of how subconscious our sensitivity to light is, given its omnipresence in our daily lives. As we are now constantly tied to our screens, the artist contemplates the disruption to our circadian rhythm caused by our devices and the light that emits from it. Such moments are as esoteric as connecting every touch of the screen to the warmth our fingertips carry.
