Mount Gede-Pangrango is a volcanic, montane national park in West Java, Indonesia. Less than 150 years ago, the area was still the domain of the Javan Rhinoceros but today there are no records of this species in this region. Centuries of poaching, combined with the loss of its tropical habitat from deforestation and human expansion have caused the severe decline of its population. Today, only about 81 Javan rhinos remain in the world, making them one of the most critically endangered animals on the planet.
