This painting, inspired by Anum’s 2010 watercolor Arch Model, reimagines a portrait of her friend Pital—architect and founder of Rumah Lukis—within a layered urban and architectural context. Drawing on memories from a 2023 trip to Georgetown, Penang, the work incorporates the distinctive “Penang tiles” that captivated Anum and recur across her paintings from this period. The composition collages facades of shophouses along Lorong Carnavon, reflecting her interest in domestic urban architecture and its visual rhythm. The tiled motifs connect to her ongoing engagement with geometric patterning and isometric design. Playfully titled in reference to the film Run Lola Run, the piece blends portraiture, place, and patterned abstraction into a richly textured meditation on memory, architecture, and visual process.

Lukis Rumah Lukis exists in a semi-fictional space where portraiture, architecture, and narrative converge. Centered on Pital—architect and founder of Rumah Lukis—holding a model of the artist-run space, the painting unfolds against a backdrop of fragmented shophouse facades and a tiled, rain-slicked street. This richly layered setting evokes themes of cultural memory, urban texture, and quiet reflection.

More than a portrait, the work honors collaboration and the infrastructure of creative communities, highlighting the role of artist-led spaces in fostering process-driven, experimental practice. Drawing from Quattrocento urban scenes and Anum’s own visual vocabulary—geometric tiles, architectural collage, atmospheric detail—the painting intertwines personal memory with art historical reference. Lukis Rumah Lukis becomes a tribute to the labor of art-making as something deeply rooted in place, relationship, and the quiet architecture of care.
