Primitive Saint (2022) is a reference to Saint Lucia, one of the venerated martyrs from Sicily, which is the hometown of the artist. Lucia, whose name originates from the Latin word ‘lux’, meaning light, is frequently depicted as a protector of sight – holding her eyes on a cup or golden plate. Sciascia reimagines this classical biblical figure with modern sensibilities that recall the ingenuity of Marcel Duchamp, attaching an anonymous pair of eyes with the readymade. As its gaze might unsettle the onlooker, the work teases the notions of perspective and identity, probing reflection on our ways of seeing.
