Liste Basel | 16 - 22 June: Aki Hassan

Messe Basel, 16 - 22 Giugno 2025

Booth 46

Yeo Workshop is pleased to present a solo presentation by Singaporean artist Aki Hassan for the gallery’s inaugural participation in Liste Basel 2025. Celebrating its 30th edition, the fair runs from 16 to 22 June at Messe Basel.

Titled An unknowing that terrifies me, this presentation marks a significant development in Aki Hassan’s practice, showcasing a new body of work that reimagines the love letter as embodied scores, a site for reflection, transmission, and resistance. Through an expanded installation of delicate drawings and sculptural forms, Aki treats the love letter not simply as a written artefact, but as a score for feeling—something that reverberates through gestures, absences, and material traces.

Engaging with the love letter as a medium of intimate exchange, Aki opens up space for affective states such as rage, longing, desire, and solidarity to circulate and take shape. These emotions are not always easily articulated in language, and the works in this exhibition express how care and conflict, attraction and estrangement, coexist within our relational landscapes. Through slow, processual acts of making, the love letter emerges as a quiet form of labour—a practice of tending and honouring both the known and the unknowable within ourselves and others.

Informed by their ongoing engagement with queer and trans* community practices, Aki’s work draws attention to how our subconscious gestures become modes of quiet resistance. These subtle yet potent expressions—held in posture, texture, repetition—persist within us as we navigate and endure the normative conventions that govern social behaviour, desire, and legibility. In this way, Aki’s work considers how the destabilised ground we collectively confront—the uncertainties of identity, belonging, and survival—shapes our suppressed desires for connection. It is within this terrain that our habits of intimacy and support are continuously reconfigured, complicated, and made anew.

With An unknowing that terrifies me, Aki invites viewers into an intimate world of sensation and relation, where written feeling is rendered into rhythm, touch, and form. Each piece acts as both a residue and a proposition: a tender offering that traces how love and its discontents live on in the body, and in the spaces between us.
