Slipper O (solo & duo, 2025) explores the slipper orchid in its many variations, capturing both their delicacy and resilience. The patterned background features a dynamic zig-zag, with complementary colours that create a subtle “Bezold effect,” in contrast to the more harmonious palette of earlier works. The orchids were observed in the humid hothouses of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, where their fragility is most apparent — attempts to cultivate them personally resulted in shriveled specimens. In nature, however, they thrive, hardy and persistent. The paintings celebrate this tension between vulnerability and endurance, and the beauty of orchids in both controlled and natural settings.
