Wong reinterprets Gai Qi and Cao Zhenxi’s Famous Women (1799), an album illustrating various women of diverse talents that push for an expanded notion of female virtue during the Qing dynasty. Oomoo becomes her own heroine in this painting, where various motifs of knowledge foreground her – from Chinese scrolls to an inscription by Emperor Qianlong.
