This melancholic piece by the Glasgow-based Singaporean artist Aki Hassan is among a new body of work featured in the solo presentation “An unknowing that terrifies me” by Singapore-based gallery Yeo Workshop, which makes its debut at Liste this year. Born in 1995, Hassan uses sculptural installations and drawings to explore how people rely on each other through relationships, community, and changing social and environmental conditions, particularly with regard to the complex nature of queer relationships. This body of work on view in Basel is a reimagination of love letters as a medium, like (my breathe –––– you swallow). At first glance, the abstract appearance of their work, which the artist described as “quiet resistance,” imposes a distance between the viewer and the work itself. But if you overcome that distance, stay for a bit longer, and take a closer look, you can feel a sense of intimacy from the gestural, layered handwriting scribbled across a surface conceived by powdered pigment resembling a certain skin tone. It is an emotionally charged work.
