Throughout history, islands have symbolized both isolation and paradise, self-sufficiency and vulnerability. In literature, philosophy, and culture, they have represented the limits of human knowledge, the existential struggle for meaning, and the tension between independence and dependence. However, in the era of climate change and global crisis, islands are no longer merely remote escapes or utopian havens. Instead, they have become frontline battlegrounds against rising seas, environmental degradation, and existential uncertainty. The connotation of the “island’s feeling” has shifted from solitude to precarity, from self-sufficiency to urgent interdependence.
