In theatre, breaking the fourth wall means breaking the wall of illusion, this series of
plan view paintings has removed the ‘fifth wall’—the ceiling in each of the depicted
rooms. What is exposed, and for us to reflect on, is the relation of production in the
world of art. The artwork is not made solely by the artist; it is also shaped by curators,
art dealers, collectors, gallerists, handlers, and artisans. Each scene is an episode
compartmentalized from a larger block. From this perspective, we are no longer
absorbed in the scene. The distance allows critical detachment and the opportunity
to laugh at ourselves like characters in a comedy.
