Stephanie J Burt's practice draws inspiration from cinema, literature and nouveau roman, translating these narratives into sculptural installations and fictional prose. Burt is interested issues surround feminism, gender and the representation of girl culture. She also explores how this are being portrayed in fashion, film and material culture through her research project, “A Stubborn Bloom”.
The notion of femininity is being challenged in Late Bloomer, as presented as a red dress in a distorted form with distressed fabrics, hanging limply in a cage. Burt raises the question of the gaze through this confined objectification of girlhood, The work recalls the words of singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis, "Open up late bloomer, it will make you smile. I can see that fire burning in you, little child."
This work was first presented at the NTU ADM Gallery at The Managed Heart: Art and Emotional Labour exhibition 2024.
