Luke Heng: and periwinkle blues

2026年7月16日 - 9月13日

Yeo Workshop is pleased to present and periwinkle blues, a solo exhibition by Singaporean artist Luke Heng in the newly-revamped public space, VITRINE @ OUE Downtown Gallery. This presentation serves as a natural continuation of the themes and ideas from his earlier solo exhibition, Mechanics of the Snap, at the gallery in Gillman Barracks, which examined the systematic failure of support structures under the weight of informational entropy. Where the latter captured the intensity and suddenness of structural failure, and periwinkle blues is a meditation on the mood that lingers after the intense “snap”—the quiet space that remains for the quasi-subject to simply be in the aftermath of its own dissolution.

Heng describes periwinkle as a “slippery” colour that is neither fully blue nor entirely purple, hues present in several of his paintings in the exhibition. “It sits on the edge of the digital screen glow and the natural world”, Heng notes, representing the instability and threshold where the image begins to dissolve. Extending beyond the colour palette, the exhibition’s title also references jazz and blues music, where a “blue note” is a note intentionally bent or sung at a lower pitch than the standard scale—an expressive deviation that exists between the cracks of the expected pitch. Heng draws parallels between this musical structure and his paintings, which function in the exact same manner. By deliberately deviating from the “perfect” or rigid reproduction of digital imagery, he injects a human vulnerability to the canvas. This visual instability, equivalent to a blue note, makes the paintings feel alive and deeply resonant.

The works in and periwinkle blues are not merely outtakes; they were developed alongside paintings from his earlier solo exhibition over the past three years and mark a significant evolution in the artist’s practice. Departing from his earlier atmospheric ‘non-place’ paintings, this series presents tightly cropped compositions that hover between cinematic stills and psychological landscapes drawn from film stills, news imagery, and digitally manipulated screenshots.

Launched in November 2025, VITRINE @ OUE Downtown Gallery is a platform by Yeo Workshop to introduce and spotlight Singaporean artists to new audiences, offering CBD visitors an art sanctuary amidst their busy office life. This spirit of public outreach in the CBD is further joined by Moving Encounters (1-18 July 2026), an initiative by Singapore Art Museum that opens up new ways of sensing and inhabiting the urban environment through a series of live interventions, guided explorations and conversations. Coinciding with the opening of and periwinkle blues on Thursday 16 July 2026 is Magic Hour Walk and Dance: A collaborative movement walk exploring space, form and bodily response led by Kien Faye, a roving performance across the CBD from 6pm to 7pm.

Later in the month of August, the gallery will host a “mindfulness with art” workshop and an exclusive artist studio visit as part of Singapore Gallery Month, a citywide celebration of contemporary art presented by Art Galleries Association Singapore (AGAS) from 15 August to 13 September 2026.

Yeo Workshop extends its gratitude to Downtown Gallery, the exhibition's venue partner and sponsor, for its generous support of this presentation and the accompanying public programmes for Singapore Gallery Month, and for its continued commitment to bringing contemporary art to the CBD.
