Where the entertainment worlds were known for their crowds and the architecture built to accommodate hundreds or thousands of spectators for any given performance, this project explores a speculative and intimate side to these realms of diversion. The Chinese opera performer, singer, cabaret girl, boxer, and jester are filmed in a series of non-narrative vignettes, shifting the viewer’s mode of surveillance as an audience member, voyeur, patron, or observer. These characters explore the spectrum of gender identities, from the extreme machismo of the male boxer and the coquettish flirtation of the cabaret girl to the alternately empowered and defeated male singer and the androgyny of the opera performer and the jester.
