Luke Heng: Mechanics of the Snap

14 Marzo - 24 Maggio 2026

Yeo Workshop is pleased to present Mechanics of the Snap, a major solo exhibition by Singaporean artist Luke Heng and his first with the gallery. The exhibition unveils a new body of oil paintings developed over the past three years that mark a significant evolution in the artist’s practice.

Departing from his earlier atmospheric ‘non-place’ paintings, this series presents tightly cropped compositions that examine the systematic failure of support structures under the weight of informational entropy. Hovering between cinematic stills and psychological landscapes, these works investigate how support systems, whether physical or psychological, falter under accumulated pressure.

Drawing from film stills, news imagery, and digitally manipulated screenshots, Heng subjects these weightless fragments to the labour-intensive process of oil painting. Ephemeral screenshots become dense material objects, resisting the frictionless glide of contemporary screens. Throughout the exhibition, the notions of absence and loss recur. “At first glance, the exhibition looks almost celebratory,” says the artist, “There are cakes, swimming pools, cars. But beneath that surface is a study of what happens when support fails.”

Mechanics of the Snap synthesises Heng's practice to date, reflecting on earlier works while introducing a fresh stylistic approach. Crystalising the moments just before collapse, these paintings offer a timely meditation on resilience and rupture—reminding us that beneath every polished surface lies a delicate framework that keeps it intact.
